There was a massive blue inflatable bumper at the bottom of the hill. To smooth the hill out so as to create less drag for the students' tubes, we hauled the bumper up to the top of the hill and rode it down. I think they do something similar to this in Japan, only it's in the summer, and it's hundreds of Japanese machos riding huge logs that invariably end up crushing a few of them.
